Back of the Book Description:
Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling should have just kept on walking. But her sense of duty refused to let her ignore the moans of pain coming from inside a warehouse just before dawn. Suddenly she finds herself in a world she’s only imagined in her worst nightmares.
At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master vampire who thought he’d seen it all. Then Kira appears – this fearless, beautiful…human who braved death to rescue him. Though he burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life. Yet sending her away is unthinkable.
But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.
I really enjoyed this book! Every time Mencheres had been mentioned through the other books in this series I couldn’t see him as anything other than a very old dude. Yeah, I know that the descriptions before were of a handsome younger looking man who just happened to be 4000+ years old…but I still couldn’t get the image of a really old guy out of my head. Then I read this book and my thoughts COMPELTELY CHANGED!
Mencheres is a very old vampire who has been around for way too long, so he thinks, and is very powerful. He has had a run of bad luck in the women department since he married a woman he thought would be his forever. That didn’t turn out the greatest and he has now been celibate for 900+ years! (I can’t even imagine). He has never been turned on by any woman and feels that he never will until Kira stumbles upon him one morning thinking she is going to save his life…
Kira is a woman at 31 years old who has a strong head on her shoulders and a soft heart. She is a private investigator working small jobs and wanting a bit more out of her career than that. She is very protective of her sister who is very sick and has more worries with her brother who is a drug addict. She thinks she has most of her life planned out until she stumbles upon Mencheres thinking she is going to save someone…that is until she is wounded to the point of almost dying and is in turned saved by the person she was supposed to be saving. Haha, ironic don’t you think?!
Mencheres’ enemy was one for the books. Redjedef is a vampire even older than Mencheres and is his uncle on top of that, but he is a vampire who is solely after power…the power that Mencheres has and Redjedef believes he deserves. Since Mencheres is a bit weaker right now, Redjedef thinks this is the perfect time to seize the power by any means necessary…even by breaking the laws that he is supposed to uphold.
This book was fabulous. I loved how Mencheres was turned into a man in my mind instead of just an old crotchety grump (that’s a little redundant isn’t it). Well it’s true…the thoughts and feelings that go through both Mencheres and Kira throughout this book at the beginning are insane. Especially when Mencheres figures out that maybe he isn’t immune to all women out there. Kira proves to be a very strong woman when she is confronted with death and keeps her head held high never flinching from what might happen to her in the end.
The love scenes are great, the feelings are intense, and the action is blinding during some parts (if you are really into playing out a movie in your head like I am). The only thing I wish is that the tub scene would have played out…that’s all I’m saying about that, you’ll understand when you read it!
You should read this book…you might even get away with reading this without reading the other 5 books since the heroine in this book wasn’t ever involved in the other ones…not as confusing that way!
