Back of Book:
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they’ve triumphed over the latest battle, Cat’s new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance…
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors that a species war is brewing.  A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage.  Now cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous “ally” – the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself.  But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war…to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

I can’t believe I didn’t read this book when I first bought it on the 22nd of February!  This was a wonderful addition to Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress Series and it did not disappoint me in the least!  Jeaniene is such an amazing author that she really pulls you into the series and you feel a strong connection to all of her characters and you can’t help but feel what they are feeling.

This story picks up with our beloved Cat and Bones and even though they have been married for awhile you can still feel the love that they share and how strong their feelings really are for each other.  I really enjoyed seeing how they interact now that they are a little out of the “honey moon” phase of their relationship and I’m so happy to see that they still have those sparks between them.  I love how Bones has always accepted Cat even though she has always been different than anyone else, first starting out as a half-vampire and then turning into an odd version of the undead.

Since Cat has shown some interesting abilities as a new vampire in the last book, Destined for an Early Grave, a ghoul has taken it upon himself to use this information to try to spark a war between ghouls and vampires using Cat as his main target.  Cat, along with her friends help, must try to figure out how to stop him from succeeding with his plans.

I really enjoyed that Jeaniene brought all of the main characters from her books together in this one even if they only had a small part and I loved that she brought in information from all her novels including her two spin-offs.  This book contains three of my all-time favorite fictional couples, Cat & Bones, Spade & Denise and Mencheres & Kira and they all have significant parts in it while still maintaining Cat and Bones as the main focus.

This book brought all of my emotions out and I was even crying my eyes out during one part.  I didn’t know that I would have that kind of reaction but Jeaniene does such a great job of explaining the thoughts and feelings of everyone that I just couldn’t help myself.  I actually had to stop reading to collect myself so I could keep going…yeah I’m a softy!  The book had me mad, sad, happy, laughing, frustrated, worried and so much more.  Such a fantastic book to really get lost in.

I’m telling you, if you enjoy paranormal romance, some kick-ass fighting, vampires, and just a wonderful series to get lost in you HAVE GOT to go pick up Halfway to the Grave and get started on this series!  On top of that, don’t knock the spin-offs and even try to read the books in order so you don’t feel like you are missing out on anything!

I am even happier to say that we don’t have to wait long to see how this series will continue since Jeaniene is releasing the next book, One Grave at a Time, on August 30, 2011!  I’m so happy to get a double dose of Cat & Bones in one year and I can’t wait to see if Jeaniene does any more spin-offs on some of the other characters…Tate?!?!? or Ian?!?!?! I don’t know, I’m just throwing out ideas. 😉

  1. I really loved Vlad in this book. Well, I love him in any Night Huntress book he’s in LOL. Nice review.

    • Yes Vlad is awesome! There is just something about him that you can’t help but absolutely love! Thanks for stopping by to check out my review Sophia, I really appreciate it! Can’t wait for book 6’s release!

  2. I was not that happy about book 1, ok and all but I just had such high expectations

    • Oh that makes me sad to hear. I hadn’t heard anything about these books really except my cousin telling me I really needed to give them a shot. I really enjoyed book one but kept getting more and more excited about the series as I kept reading the books.

  3. @blodeuedd – Sorry this wasn’t your cup of tea. I do hope you keep going with it though.

Great review hon. I have maybe 100 pages left until my review. I can’t wait to write mine. I a so with you, Tate, Ian, and Vlad need books especially Vlad. He has me cracking up, it is hard not to like him. I couldn’t agree with you more, no year long wait, we get more in a few months. YAY! Thank you for the review hon 🙂

    • I do agree with Diana here on I hope you keep reading the books blodeuedd! Thanks for checking this out Diana, I can’t wait to see what your review holds. 😀 I have enjoyed all of the characters on Cat and Bones side. I still am stumped on if I have an absolute favorite character out of the series….it’s just to hard for me to decide. 😛 But really any of the guys would make me happy to see another Spin-off from…I still would love to see Tate find his true love so that he wouldn’t be so bitter about Cat & Bones being together.

  4. This is a Paranormal Romance series at it’s best. You are very right about that! Great review!

  5. DarkBloodyVamp

I agree 100% with your review Jeaniene is an amazing writer and I LOVE CAT & BONES!

What I find fascinating is many readers say the exact same thing about Jeaniene that “she really pulls you into the series and you feel a strong connection to all of her characters and you can’t help but feel what they are feeling.” I have said the exact same thing about her and her books and that is why I find Jeaniene to be a genius because it is rare have that effect on so many readers! 🙂

    • Thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to read my review! I really do appreciate it. 🙂 I am glad that so many other people feel the same way about this series as I do. Every time I read one of Jeaniene’s books I just get lose in the world of her words. I can’t help but be sucked in and no want to put the book down. These are also books I think about a lot after I finish them trying to sort everything out or tie things together even after the fact.

  6. Deanna, Thanks for the comment on my blog! You asked me about if I had read this series over there…I devoured this group of five books in about 3 days a few weeks ago. I am in love with Cat & Bones. After that marathon reading them, though, I wasn’t ready to dive into the NH world books, even though now I know that I should have read them between books 4 & 5. ;o) Your review of this one is fantastic!!!
    smiles….

    • I’m happy to hear that you love Cat & Bones, I don’t know what is not to love about them! 😀 I don’t think the NH world books have to be read in order with the books but it does make it a little smoother. Of course since you devoured them in a marathon maybe they will go on your list to reread so you can see all the awesome little details you might have missed the first time around and then you can read the two spin-offs in order with the series. So happy to see another fan of Jeaniene Forst!
